Want to work with isla but can’t make the time commitment? Looking to do a short-term, but meaningful, service experience? Prefer to travel with a group? Then service-learning trips (SLTs) are for you! SLTs are short-term, impactful collaborations between students/working professionals and local Ugandan community leaders, with a little bit of travel in-between.

About: 10-day, 7-person trip to Kasese, Uganda
Civic engagement refers to the ways in which citizens participate in the life of a community in order to improve conditions for others or to help shape the community’s future.
Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.
Day 1: Group arrival at Entebbe.
Day 2: Travel to Kasese, Uganda. City tour, orientation and dinner.
Day 3: Orientation: Host family introductions, language class, safety/security instruction, Ugandan history lesson.
Day 4: Site visits to choice LPOs
Day 5: Workshops/Mini Conference Day 1: Service-learners and community leaders – What is civic engagement?
Day 6: Workshops/Mini Conference Day 2: Service-learners and community leaders – How do we foster civic engagement? What results when communities engage in politics and local organizations?
Day 7: Chimpanzee tour – Kibale Forest National Park
Day 8: Essay or photo sharing. Plenary discussion and reflection on mini conference.
Day 9: Travel to Kampala (City tour)
Day 10: Leave Entebbe
